The Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association 2018 Winter School of Instruction convened at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines from Sunday, December 2nd through Wednesday, December 5th
Sunday afternoon, “Registration” was available to early arrivals, only to be followed by the evening buffet in the Courtyard. President Hammen announced the ISSDA Scholarship winners. Sunday night entertainment was Comedian – Magician Jonathan May.
Monday morning, “Registration” continued and ISSDA Sales items were available. The customary “Welcome” was given by ISSDA President Hammen and Invocation was given by Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson. The “Presentation of the Flags” was made by the ISSDA Honor Guard.
The first topic was Partnership for Safe Medicines by Sven Bergman. Sven talked on the enormous amount of but less then pure medicines coming in to the USA.
Attorney David Schrock then discussed Use of Force, OSHA in the Jail.
Attorney Skyler Limkemann then followed with more discussion on Liabilies
In Public Safety.
Lt Colonel Jon Borg with Iowa Counterdrug Task Force talked on their duties and the Training available to Law Enforcement.
The day concluded with Shawna Isaac representing the Iowa Narcotics Officers Association advising how to utilize their training trailer What you don’t see.
The evening was Vendor Hospitality including drawings.
Tuesday morning, Sean Mullis, FBI, reviewed the Alabama Hostage Incident where a young person was abducted and held underground but successfully rescued.
The Past President’s luncheon was at noon with current Board members attending.
After lunch, Dr Tony Tatman, Psychologist, discussed the MMPI test and the value of it.
The membership then held their Annual Business Meeting.
The Sheriff Breakout Session was cancelled due to time restraints.
Tuesday evening was the President’s Banquet with Past President Josh Hammen presenting the gavel to Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider.
The President’s Reception followed.
Wednesday morning, Dan Zsido talked for several hours on Fentanyl Safety Awareness and Drug Trends.
This concluded the 2018 Winter School of Instruction.
