Baxter Iowa Seeking Police Chief

The City of Baxter, Iowa, (Population 1,101) is seeking candidates for the position of Police Chief. The position is currently filled by an Interim Chief and is available immediately. Baxter is a growing community located in northern Jasper County. With close proximity to the Des Moines metro area, Ames, Newton and Marshalltown a majority of its citizens work outside of the city. A comfortable commute allows residents easy access to quality shopping, cultural, sporting and entertainment opportunities. There are quality recreation options with a free local wellness center and access to the 25-mile, hard surface Chichaqua Recreation Trail. Education Requirements:

Graduation from a college or university with at least an Associate’s Degree in Police Science, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a closely related field. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


Ten (10) years of experience in police operations, including at least five (5) years of law enforcement supervisory experience is preferred.


Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, within one year. The successful candidate must pass a physical examination, psychological examination and drug screen.

Salary and Benefits:

The Police Chief is an FLSA exempt position.
Salary is dependent on candidate’s education and experience.

City prefers that the selected candidate live in the city of Baxter (a reasonable response time may be considered in lieu of city residency)

Additional Requirement: The successful candidate will be required to obtain their EMT-B certification within one year of appointment
