ISSDA Honor Guard

The ISSDA Honor Guard is comprised of approximately sixty members from various Sheriff’s Offices located across the state. Many of its members attend events and functions on a volunteer basis and do so with tremendous pride and professionalisms. I would like to give an update on the types of events that the ISSDA Honor Guard have participated in, and provide an update on the direction in which the ISSDA Honor Guard is moving.

In 2019 the ISSDA Honor Guard attended twenty-one separate events which included funerals for active duty and retired personnel in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and North Dakota. ISSDA Honor Guard functions also included marching in the Iowa State Fair Parade, Assisted with the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremonies and Posted Colors for multiple graduating Basic Classes at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, all ISSDA Schools, The Iowa School Resource Officers Conference, The Annual LIEN Conference, and special events which included Racing for a Cause at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, and at the Knoxville Sprint Car Nationals.

In August, the ISSDA Honor Guard held their 5th Annual ISSDA Honor Guard Training Class in Dubuque. The training included work on How to execute Drill and Ceremony activities, Marching with Flags and Shotguns, Facing Movements, Parade Marching with “wheels” and “swings”, Manual of Arms with the Shotgun and Rifles, Flag Folding, Firing Parties, Casket Watch and Funeral Detail. The class was attended by approximately 30 members, and plans are already being finalized for the 2020 training class.

The continued success of the ISSDA Honor Guard has been achieved by the dedication of our Deputies and Sheriffs that allow the Honor Guard members the time to attend the various functions. 2019 marked a very busy year for the Honor Guard and it was very nice to see the increased level of involvement from the members of the Honor Guard. To ensure the continued success of the ISSDA Honor Guard we need to keep attendance at the various functions a high priority so that the majority of the work is not being done by a small number of Honor Guard Members.

If you need the ISSDA Honor Guard for any upcoming functions or if you wish to join the ISSDA Honor Guard, please contact Sheriff Gregg Morton from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, or Deputy Chris Langenberg with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
